Developmental Players (DPs) are players that are full time players with one of our affiliate clubs and join Richmond United on a weekly basis for practices with the ability to also play in Richmond United games. These players are usually high-performing players, who for various reasons, are not yet ready to compete consistently in the ECNL on a full-time basis. With the DP program, those players receive additional practice and game opportunities through the RU environment.
This process improves the integreation of new players in the team environment and increases the accuracy of placing players in the correct development environment. 9 players, who have been DPs in 2019/20 were added as Full Time players for the 2020/21 season.
Developmental Player Guidelines
- Training - DPs will train 4 times per week. 1-2 times with Richmond United and 2-3 times with their affiliate club. Players will have additional opportunities to attend more Richmond United practices during times when the affiliate club does not provide practices (for example, in preseason or winter, or when High School age teams stop practicing for the Spring).
- Games - Each DP will have an Individual Development Plan that provides an expectation for the number of Richmond United games they will participate in over the course of the season; however, this plan is flexible and can always be adapted to the individual player's situation at any given time. DPs will play in all games with their affiliate club unless communicated otherwise by Richmond United or affiliate club staff.
- DPs are also invited to participate in other Richmond United initiatives, including IDPs, College Assistance, Sports Performance, Futsal, etc.
